Five Elements Columns

The five elements in Five Elements Columns Square are metal, wood, water, fire and earth. By fusing the five elements with calendar, the ancestors of the Hani people invented an ancient calendar called "October Solar Calendar" used to calculate time. In the solar calendar, a year consists of five seasons, namely, the seasons of metal, wood, water, fire and earth, with only two months in each season, 36 days in each month and totally 360 days in a year. The rest 5 or 6 days are holidays, which are used for holding all kinds of celebrations.

Hani people celebrate two "new years" each year, which are the "June New Year" in summer and "October New Year" in winter, respectively. The celebrations last for 2 to 3 days, mainly for the purpose of worshipping the God of Heaven and praying for a good harvest in the year.
